Venice Accademia and Dorsoduro District Guided Tour | Weekend in Italy

Your tour begins with the Accademia Gallery, gem among the famous museums in Venice. Located in the picturesque Dorsoduro district, the museum lies next to the Accademia Bridge on the Grand Canal.

Three different buildings are part of the he Accademia Gallery Venice complex - the Scuola Grande of Saint Mary of Charity, the Gothic church with the same name and the Palladian corridor of the convent of the Lateran Canons. Follow your guide for a comprehensive overview of the museum and the main art works kept inside, which offer an interesting overview of Venetian painting from the 14th to the 18th century. You’ll see art works by Giovanni Bellini, Vittore Carpaccio, Giorgione, Jacopo Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese and Titian up to Giambattista Tiepolo and the great landscape painters of the 18th century. In addition to several works of religious art, precious testimonies about the life and customs of the Venetian past belong to the collection, including genre scenes by Pietro Longhi and the veduta of Francesco Guardi and Bernardo Bellotto.

Your visit to the Accademia Gallery will be followed by a guided stroll through the Dorsoduro sestiere (district), a neighborhood not generally included in the main tourist itineraries of Venice.

Your guide will introduce you to the nearby church of Saint Sebastian (entrance is not included). The elegant Renaissance masterpiece of sober and essential character safeguards an important cycle of paintings by Paolo Veronese as well as the tomb of the artist himself, near the organ.

Your final stop will be in front of the small “squero” at San Trovaso - the shipyard where gondolas are built, the symbol of Venice. It is one of the most surprising and characteristic places of Venice. You’ll get to see it from the outside while listening to the explanations of your local guide.

Your guided tour ends here - however, before leaving the area, we recommend that you continue your visit of the Dorsoduro district independently. For example, you could enjoy a walk to the nearby Fondamenta delle Zattere, which offers a splendid view of the canal and the island of Giudecca (especially enjoyable from one of the cafe tables set by the edge of the water). Otherwise, let yourself amble along the quiet alleyways, through the fascinating everyday life of a city that is astonishingly similar to the paintings you will have seen at the Accademia earlier.
