We sail past the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore, the S. Elena Gardens and the Lido famous for its beaches, making our first stop at Murano, renowned the world over for its glassware and factories.
The second stop is the Island of Burano, known not only for its lacemaking but also the brightly-coloured fishermen's cottages.
From here, it's just a ten-minute sail across the sandbanks to Torcello, the first settlement in the lagoon. The cathedral with its magnificent mosaics and the Church of Santa Fosca dating to the 11th-12th century are a testimony of the island's ancient splendour.
