Overview

Discover Villa Emo, quite possibly the most famous among the Palladian Venetian villas. Built by Andrea Palladio between 1557 and 1560 upon commission of the Venetian patrician Leonardo Emo, it is the perfect example of a villa-farm, embodying the relationship of continuity between manor and surrounding countryside.

The main building of Villa Emo, patrician residence, has a classic ground plan with Doric columns, vestibule, lobby and rooms placed symmetrically on either side. The “barchesse,” formed by arched long arcades, were workplaces and once housed cellars, barns, stables. As a whole, Villa Emo evokes the ideals of harmony and proportion.

The rooms of Villa Emo were frescoed by Giambattista Zelotti in 1565. The frescoes represent the ideals pursued by the client, with scenes inspired by mythology and agriculture extolling the virtues of domestic life and family as well as social understanding between master and workers.
