Details

Villa Pisani Bonetti was planned by Andrea Palladio in 1541 and is a standout amongst the works of the early career of this soon-to-be star architect of the 16th century. Commissioned by the illustrious Pisani family, it was built from 1544 to 1545 in Bagnolo di Lonigo close to Vicenza, and opened the rich chapter of Andrea Palladio’s collaboration with the Most Serene Republic of Venice.

The structure of Villa Pisani, located near Vicenza and Venice, is inspired by the monuments of Imperial Rome. And, as with all Palladian villas, it serves as a gathering place for festive activities as well as the center of agricutural production on the famiy's land. The positioning of the building within the estate reflects Palladio’s opinion that a building should be in close connection with the surrounding environment. Inside the villa, richly painted frescoes with scenes from Ovid's Metamorphoses, possibly due to the hand of Francesco Torbido, a student of Giulio Romano, enhance the monumentality of the architectural space.

The unusual placement of the kitchen is worth noting: it was moved to the main floor during the 18th century, to place it out of reach of floodwaters from the river Guà. The Villa, consummately taken care of by the owners, is on the UNESCO World Heritage list along with the other Palladian villas of the Veneto since 1996. Villa Pisani Bonetti offers guided visits for the general public, and hosts events and contemporary art shows.
